Welcome to Useless Knowledge!

Saturday, January 19, 2002

We had many plans this weekend. Going to see Lord of the Rings, shopping, looking for some new furniture, etc. But, we ended up staying home today. Last night Rachel was upchucking. At one point it was coming out both ends. She was just beat. So we all stayed home today. I took an extremely long nap this afternoon, something I rarely do. I can't believe I slept three hours! I was feeling a little strange, but now I'm feeling better.

Rachel is much better today, but just totally exhausted. At least she has a long weekend to recover. We didn't have school Friday, so four day weekend! Woohoo!

Well, first I have to post my Useless Knowledge fact for the week. Did you know the country that buys the most books per capita is Norway? Must be all that cold winter weather.

Now, something happened last night at the skating party that really upset me. Thank God my husband was awake when I got home so I could discuss it with him. Otherwise I probably would have been up all night thinking and worrying and wondering.

The rule at our parties is that you must stay with your child. You can't just drop them off. A couple brought their son in, and a few minutes later we saw them heading out the door. Since I was working at the party, I went after them and said "Excuse me, you can't leave your child here unattended." The man turned to me, and very sarcastically said "I'm smoking a cigarette. Is that okay with you?" I said "I'm sorry but I just had to make sure you weren't leaving." The PTA lady was standing out there, hearing the whole thing. She said she'd watch them, as they have tried to leave in the past. I went back inside and stood next to the other lady who was working with me. A few minutes later the couple entered, and the woman turned to the man and said "Is that the one, the bitch who was all up in your face 'cause you are black?" And he said "Yeah."

My jaw dropped to the floor. So did the other lady's. I said "Did you just hear what he said?!?!" I tried to let it go, but it bothered me the whole evening. And to top it off, they sent their son over to ask me my name. I showed him my name tag, and said "Tell your parents if they have a problem with me, they need to come and talk to me themselves, and not send their child."

Well, they didn't give me anymore problems that evening. The first thing this morning I told the principal what had happened. She told me not to worry about it, that I was just doing my job, and that I handled it very well. She said they have had problems before with this particular couple. You see the man was black, and the woman was white. The principal of the school is white, and her husband is black. She couldn't have been more supportive. She told me this child's teacher has reported his parents react in this same manner all the time.

Why is it that people can't realize others treat them a certain way because they are jerks or assholes, not because they are black or white or whatever? And I was not in the least bit rude to them. I said the same thing to a white lady a few minutes later who said she was leaving. She didn't take offense.

It really angers me when people say I am a racist when I'm just doing my job. I am a racist against jerks and people who are way to full of themselves.

Hey all. Just taking a few quick minutes before Rachel's bus pulls up to blog. We have the school skating party tonight, and I am getting paid to go! They have to have two teachers there, and no one was able to do it, so I volunteered. I was going to take Rachel anyway, so I might as well get paid for it. Parents have to stay there with their child at all times. We aren't babysitting.

Well, we got the spare room mostly cleaned out, and the exercise bike is up and going. I've ridden it every day this week, and I sure hope it will start to show on my fat bod soon! Now all we need is the computer table and the TV stand. We were looking last weekend, but we haven't decided on anything yet.

Work has been so busy! I could stay there full time and never get it all done. But I've been trying to leave when I'm supposed to and not stay later than I'm getting paid for. It's tough when you see so much that needs to be done.
